Renewable energy refers to recyclable energy sources that originated from nature, which mainly includes solar energy, hydropower, wind power, biomass, wave energy, tidal energy, and ocean thermal energy. Taking into account the process control requirements for renewable energy, HollySys designed and developed automation control solutions and products for biomass power, solar power, and biogas power equipment, providing integrated solutions for aspects ranging from production process to data management. Currently, HollySys has implemented more than 100 renewable energy power and environmentally friendly facilities.
HollySys started to develop systems for biomass power plants from 2002 onwards, and the established solutions provided included waste incineration power generation and straw burning power generation, which included many types of incineration facilities such as fluidised bed incinerators, mechanical grate incinerators, special and medical waste incinerators, Denmark BWE incinerators, and Wuxi boilers.
After many years of practical experience, HollySys adopted its patented 5th generation DCS control system and used it in its “full plant integration” control solutions for the biomass power generation industry. This eliminated the need for the configuration of large volumes of PLCs in the biomass power generation plant, whereby avoiding the emergence of individual “automated solitary islands” that may arise from communication bottlenecks between PLCs, thus generating favourable conditions for more integrated management of real-time data of the whole plant. At the same time, HollySys also developed many types of software such as coordinated control system (CCS), automatic combustion control system (ACC), furnace supervisory safeguard system (FSSS), digital electro-hydraulic control system (DEH), steam turbine protection emergency trip system (ETS), and electrical control and monitoring system, which are applicable to biomass power plant master control units. Up to 2010, HollySys has successfully implemented nearly 100 biomass power plant projects in the biomass power generation industry.
Biogas power generation technology provides clean energy, and it is a new technology that is environmentally friendly and energy saving. Biogas power generation converts waste into power, which not only addresses the environmental issues caused by biogas projects, but consumes large amount of waste, protects the environment, and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. This technology is also able to generate large amounts of thermal energy and electrical energy, which is in line with the concept of protecting the environment using renewable energy, which also brings about major economic benefits.
The biogas power generation automation control system monitors, controls, interlocks, sends alerts, and prints reports on the process parameters, electric parameters, and equipment operating status of the biogas processing system and the biogas power generation system. It uses a series of communication links to fulfil all the functions needed for industry processes such as data acquisition, data communication, sequence control, time control, circuit regulation, and host computer monitoring and management. The whole system comprises a central control room, field DCS control room (set up in the biogas processing system, biogas power generation system), and test instruments, controlling the different biogas power generation processes in a distributed manner, and implementing centralised control via the central control room’s host computer.
HollySys’ DCS system has been used in solid waste incineration control since 2004. Back then, Shenzhen Han’s Solid Waste Treatment Equipment Co., Ltd. used HollySys’ MACS DCS system for their solid waste treatment plants in Xi’an, Zhengzhou, and Jinan, controlling the LXRF vertical rotating pyrolysis and gasification incinerator.
Pyrolysis and gasification refers to keeping the air supply below the theoretical air volume to achieve partial combustion. Once the post-burning high-temperature gases enter the waste-heat boiler to undergo heat-exchange, the superheated steam will generate power upon entering the steam-turbine generator. The LXRF waste incineration treatment system comprises the auto-feed system, incineration system, deslagging system, exhaust gas treatment system, auto-check and control system, and waste-heat utilisation system. The key controls include feed control, furnace rotation control, furnace temperature control, furnace pressure control, slag output control, acid-alkali liquid removal pump control, boiler air bubble level control, and dust-removal control, all of which are fully automated. The waste can be directly fed into the incinerator without sorting, filtering, and crushing.
Concentrating solar power (CSP) uses a renewable power source which is solar energy. It reduces reliance on fossil fuels and is a key direction for addressing energy shortage.
In Turpan, Xinjiang, China Guodian’s Xinjiang-based company built a 400,000kW solar power generation base that uses mainly trough-concentrating thermal power technology, which uses a technological research development path of pilot plant – demo plant – scalable growth. In such projects, the pilot DEH, ETS, and TSI systems use HollySys’ products. In addition, HollySys provided pilot equipment with core steam-turbine control and safety protection systems.
